Three things we noticed in the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer

AT long last the new Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer has released online, sending Marvel fans into raptures.

The trailer, offering a more extensive look at the film’s villains than the earlier teaser, unveiled all five antagonists without any of the secrecy.

Electro’s new comic-accurate appearance was pleasing to the eye, while appearances for Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), Sandman (Thomas Haden Church) and Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) were more substantial than previous.

There was also a deeper look at Doctor Strange’s role in proceedings, given that Peter Parker seeks assistance from the Sorcerer Supreme to help re-instate his secret identity; in turn unwittingly unleashing the most formidable villains from the Spiderverse on the MCU.

But what exactly did we pick up from the latest No Way Home sneak peek?

A nod to a fallen Avenger

It’s not one of the biggest things to take away from the trailer, but it’s something you might have missed if you blinked at the wrong moment.

As the trailer sets the scene in New York, one of the iconic sights – the Statue of Liberty – makes an appearance; only it’s had, or at least is having, somewhat of an upgrade.

Behind the scaffolding you can see what appears to be a version of Captain America’s shield being added to Lady Liberty.

Steve Rogers vacated his key role as an Avenger in the aftermath of the victory over Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, and while his legacy lives on through Sam Wilson, America still seeks to honour his service.

It’s an apt tribute as Captain America is often known as the Sentinel of Liberty.

If this is the case, then it is likely that No Way Home takes place before the Falcon and the Winter Soldier series fully completes it’s arc.

Maguire and Garfield confirmed?

One of the biggest debates has been whether former Spider-Men Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have any kind of role to play in the film.

Given the presence of so many villains from both the Sam Raimi trilogy and the Amazing Spider-Man films, the addition of both Maguire and Garfield is not at all surprising.

However, Marvel and Sony have thus far tried to keep it a secret, and they’ve done an alright job – until now.

Depending on what trailer you’ve seen, there is a scene within Holland’s encounter with Electro, Sandman and Lizard that sees Lizard take a blow in mid air; but the Spider-Man we can see isn’t close enough to be a factor.

That suggests that both Garfield and Maguire were edited out of this particular shot; albeit with one or two crumbs left behind in error.

It would make sense considering there are three villains here, with a version of Parker set to take on each one.

A devastating loss

There’s also a short clip of MJ (Zendaya) falling from a great height, echoing that of Gwen Stacy’s (Emma Stone) death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Whether MJ dies or not remains to be seen, though Spidey tries desperately to catch her.

Which one though? The most obvious candidate would be Holland; but given the resemblance to Gwen’s own fate, it might be a perfect opportunity for Garfield’s Spider-Man to redeem himself.

Yet even if MJ escapes relatively unscathed, there are still another three potential avenues whereby Parker could suffer the devastating loss.

Best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) would be the other obvious fatality; even losing him as a friend in a transition to villain Hobgoblin remains a possibility.

Alternatively still, either Aunt May or Happy Hogan could see their MCU run come to an abrupt end here. Parker has to lose something substantial, otherwise what’s the point?

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set for release on December 15.
